ANOTHER DAY / ANOTHER DELFT: A MATERIAL PLAYGROUND FOR REIMAGINING THE CITY'S INFRASTRUCTURE

Under the pavements, along the canals, and through the routes we travel each day, Delft is held together by its infrastructure. A bridge or railway line, certainly—but also a curb, a bench, a bicycle rack, a drain, a door lock, a surveillance camera, or the pavement stone beneath our feet. Infrastructure can be as small as the design of an entrance and as large as Delft’s water-management, housing, mobility, energy, and digital systems. And while they certainly keep the city running, they also quietly shape what we can do, how we move, and who gets access to what. Infrastructures are therefore never entirely neutral. Designed with particular purposes, users, and priorities in mind, they support certain ways of living while making others more difficult or even impossible. Yet they often disappear into the background, appearing fixed, technical, or inevitable.

In this hands-on workshop, we bring Delft’s infrastructures back into view. What are they doing, beyond their stated function? Who and what do they accommodate? Who and what do they leave out? What behaviours and relationships do they encourage? And how might they be assembled differently? After a short introduction, the workshop becomes a material playground. Working collectively with a mixture of methods, media, and materials, we will examine infrastructures at different scales, from everyday objects to city-wide systems, and speculate on alternative ways of organizing life in Delft.
